Titanium Grade 5 Screws for Salt Walter & High Strength

Q: Can you give me a recommendation for a fastener material for a vibrating screen in a mineral processing plant which uses salt water? I’m not sure of selecting a material that combines fatigue loading strength and anti-corrosion.

A: Though I don’t know the specifics of the load strength you need, you might want to consider Titanium grade 5 fasteners or sometimes refered to as Ti (6Al-4V). Titanium Grade 5 faseteners offer 4 times the strength of 316 stainless steel and at 148 ksi UTS it considered a very strong material. It so offers high yield strength of 138 ksi. In regards to corrosion resistance, Titanium fasteners are a go-to material for salt corrosion protection as they are nearly immune to solutions of chlorides, hypochlorites, chlorates, perchlorates and chlorine dioxide.
